Once a year, the Grove City College math department holds a community math day on campus. I was one of the pre-service teacher volunteers to participate as a lead teacher. As a lead teacher, I was given a math theme to teach and a rough age range. From there I planned an hour long lesson to teach a math concept based on that theme.
My first year, I taught M&M Math. In this session, students were given a mini bag of M&M's. With the M&M's, we read an M&M story, sorted the M&M's by color, counted them, created patterns with our M&M's, and made a class graph of our favorite M&M color. At the end the students were able to eat the M&M's.
My second year teaching at Math Blast, I was in charge of teaching Measuring with Cinderella. At this session, students helped Cinderella (myself dressed up as her) get measurements for a new ball gown. Students used magic wand rulers, uni-fix cubes, their hands and feet, to measure different parts of Cinderella, such as her feet, arm span, and waist. In my room, I had two assistant teachers, who also dressed up as other Disney princesses, so that more students could help measure them for a new ball gown. Students recorded their measurements on a worksheet.
Math Blast is an amazing community based program that helps encourage the love of math within the Grove City Community. It takes a lot of planning, but is a fun day for both parents and their children. Students get to practice math, while also having a great time. This day has helped me to develop my professional presence within the community through parent interactions and helping to coordinate the day so that it runs smoothly. I hope to one day implement a similar program in my classroom or grade level someday.
