Edmodo is an online learning management system that allows teachers to create and assign projects and questions to their students. Teachers can use this to assess and gauge student understanding of the topic being discussed in class. Through Edmodo, teachers can assign assignments, homework, quizzes, polls, and add snapshots to a class news feed. To do this teachers need to first create an account on Edmodo. From there they create and name their class. Teachers can add parents and students to their class and create different groups to separate them as well. Then teachers can add assessments, homework assignments, questions, or documents and post them in the class news feed. From there, students can access the assignments to complete them and then turn them in. I would instruct parents and students to create an account, then I could either invite them to join the class via email or have them use the class code. I would then instruct students and parents to find assignments on the class news feed and then have them complete the assignments or questions for that day. I can receive the results from these assessments by seeing who turned them in and the average scores on questions. With the results from these assessments, I can gauge student understanding and narrow down specific areas that students are struggling with so that I know what I need to reteach or re-explain. This project fits into the Danielson Framework for Teaching in that it is a great tool/resource for teachers to use to better instruct their students. More specifically it fits into component 3D because it is a good tool for assessment. It fits into the element monitoring student learning because it allows teachers to check on student progress through the questions and assignments assigned through the Edmodo class.
Overall this project went really well. Edmodo is a very user-friendly site. If I could do anything differently, it would be to pick a broader topic about Ancient China. I found it difficult to come up with a lot of assignments that had to do specifically with the Silk Road. The learning from this tech tool ties into what I am currently learning in Foundations of Teaching because we are learning about lesson plans. In lesson plans, formative assessment is very important. With Edmodo this form of assessment is easier to track. In my future classroom, I will use Edmodo to assign homework assignments that parents can complete with their child such as short readings with a couple comprehension questions.
