During my special education student teaching placement, I was given the opportunity to assist in crafting the students' IEPs. This opportunity gave me experience in collecting data on each of the students and using this data to help form their overall goals and short-term objective goals for the 2018-2019 school year. I also gained knowledge in using IEPWriter (n.d.), an online program that helps teachers write and record their changes to student IEPs. Once the IEPs were complete, I was given the opportunity to attend all of my students' IEP meetings. This professional experience gave me the opportunity to see how an IEP meeting is run and how professional teachers work with parents to adjust and modify their child's IEP so that they are getting the most out of their educational experience. I found this experience a rewarding one. It was great to present parents with real data on their children and how we were going to take where they were at now and stretch them to achieve more. It was also exciting to share with the parents how much their children have grown over the last year. The parents loved hearing this and seemed to be encouraged by this.
This experience ties into component 4F of the Danielson Framework because this platform required me to not only dress professionally, but also to act as a professional in my mannerisms and speech. IEP meetings are not taken lightly. It was imperative that we kept the atmosphere in the meetings light and positive, as well as ensured each parent felt like their voice was being heard and their input addressed. This experience taught me so much about the behind-the-scenes process of IEP writing and expanded my professionalism in showing me new tactics to working with parents in a professional manner.
