For my Primary Literacy class, I spent an hour each week for seven weeks in a third grade classroom at Mercer Elementary School as a literacy aide. Throughout this field, I was able to assist this class during their literacy period in the morning in many different ways. I was able to do a whole class read aloud using a basal reader, teach a game on synonyms and antonyms, complete running records for the entire class, partner read two folktales to the class, run and rehearsed a reader's theater, and finally, teach a whole class lesson on metaphors, similies, and personification. My time in this classroom gave me numerous learning experiences and challenged me to think outside of the box as a teacher. My co-op encouraged having fun while learning and making each lesson memorable for his students. This is why this field falls under component 3C of the Danielson Framework, which is about creating engaging lessons for students. This field gave me multiple opportunities to instruct this classroom of third graders and allowed me to create a fun and engaging lesson, which I was able to teach my last week in the classroom. As I created this lesson plan, I made sure to include as many opportunities for students to be involved as possible. I had students help me to make lists of similes, metaphors, and personification found in the story Owl Moon by Jane Yolen. Students also worked together to play a tic-tac-toe game that involved identifying similes, metaphors, and personification. Overall, I was able to discover what a good literacy program looks like and I was able to gain valuable experience teaching and managing a classroom during literacy instructional time.
