During my Music Methods class, I created a fall themed four day unit plan that incorporated music into each lesson plan. Throughout the class, I learned about different music resources teachers can use to incorporate music into the regular classroom. For example the website GoNoodle offers music themed brain breaks for students. While creating this unit plan, I had to use a variety of music resources to find songs and music activities that went along with the topic being taught each day.
Throughout the unit plan students explore different areas of the season fall, such as the changing of the leaves and how this happens in Science, graphing different kinds of apples in Math, the story behind Thanksgiving in Social Studies, and going on a leaf hunt after reading a story in Reading. Throughout each lesson plan students learn different songs, perform motions to the beat, or use music during transitions.
Music Methods taught me that music is not as hard as people think to incorporate into the everyday classroom. Music also provides other means for reinforcing the topics taught within the instructional time of each day. Research has proven music to be more beneficial than not for learning. It was definitely beneficial to have this opportunity to incorporate music into a unit plan because it taught me that music adds another element to a lesson, and is a fun and engaging way to further the learning occurring withing the classroom.
