This component of Domain 1 is about how teachers need to get to know their students. Teaching is more than just teaching from the curriculum, teachers need to learn and know their students needs and preferred method of learning. This is important because once a teacher knows the needs of their students, then they can adequately meet their needs. By having this knowledge in their toolbox, teachers can better engage their students, as well as help them improve on weaker skills. Getting to know students is also another way for teachers to be made aware of special circumstances such as if the student has special needs or is an English Language Learner (ELL).
