Service learning allows students to go outside the classroom to do hands-on problem solving while still following the curriculum. Service learning helps fulfill component 1E of the Danielson Framework of Teaching. This is because service learning provides teachers with a fun, engaging learning activity for their students. As teachers, we must come up with ways to enhance the curriculum and service learning allows teachers to do just that. A service learning project can become the basis for a whole unit in the curriculum. Teachers can use these opportunities to better design coherent instruction. For my service learning project, I led a Teacher Tech Thursday class that taught teachers how to use three programs: Tackk, Microsoft Sway, and Smore. All three of these tools allow teachers to create fun, interactive newsletters for their classroom. My teammates and I led a presentation that described each tool and how teachers can use those tools in the classroom. We also showed a short tutorial for each. We then split the teachers into three groups based on which tool they wanted to learn. From there we helped the teachers to further explore the tool. From this experience, I not only gained experience using new technology tools, but I also was able to expand my PLN by meeting new teachers in my area. Overall, it was a great experience and learning opportunity. I would definitely do it again in the future.
