Seesaw is an excellent formative assessment tool to use within the classroom. Seesaw offers hands-on learning opportunities through a digital platform. The flexibility of Seesaw is part of the reasons it is one of my favorite tools to implement within the classroom.
Seesaw has video, camera, and recording capabilities, as well as drawing, typing, and shape tools which allow teachers to create assignments and assessment tools that are quick and easy for students to complete during class time.
I have used Seesaw for Math check-ins, which allows me to determine which students have mastered a skill versus those that need additional support and instruction. Additionally, Seesaw has allowed me to assess students on Dolch high frequency words. Often I'll have students identify, spell, and record themselves reading these words. This helps me to gauge who has learned these words, as well as identify specific patterns in certain reader's reading. For example, if one student is struggling to read words with long-vowel sounds, I can pull them during guided reading to further work on this during during our word work portion of my small group lesson.
Additionally, Seesaw allows me as a teacher to give feedback in real time. I have the ability to write and record myself showing the student where they made a mistake and how to fix it. Furthermore, I can have students resubmit assignments if I feel they need to try it again due to misinterpreting directions.
Seesaw allows me to communicate with students, as well as quickly and easily gauge student understanding. Which then allows me to adjust and inform my whole group, small group, and individual instruction to meet these needs.
