This component of Domain 1 is about how creating coherent instruction is important for student learning. This requires teachers to be knowledgeable of the state standards, curricular standards, and how they progress and build upon each other. Lessons need to advance and challenge students at their appropriate levels. This component is the heart of teaching. Teachers need to enhance students' understanding and learning. This is important because teachers must have a firm understanding of their content area and how it relates to their students and state standards in order for students to learn. Teachers also must be able to develop lessons that are thought provoking, challenging, and reach all learners. By creating engaging lessons with a variety or resources and grouping students up mindfully and intentionally, teachers will be able to effectively reach their students.
