As an educator, it is imperative to stay organized and to maintain accurate records of your students' progress throughout the year. During my special education student teaching placement, I was able to learn how to use the online program OnHand Schools to maintain and keep a grade book for my Autistic Support classroom. This program allows for teachers to make separate grade books for each subject and to add different class lists for each. This is especially helpful if the school is doing split and switch classes for certain subjects. OnHand Schools also allows for attendance to be taken electronically. This program allowed for me to keep accurate grades, as well as monitor how each of my students were doing in each subject area. It also kept all of their grades organized. The well-designed layout made looking up assignments and fixing missing grades quick and easy. Learning to use this program also taught me the importance of staying up to date with your grade book. It is hard to see where students are struggling and who may need more intervention, if you do not know where each of your students stand. By maintaining these records of progress, it is easy to know who needs extra help and where they need extra help. It also makes communicating these needs to parents a lot easier. When the data backs up what you are seeing, there is less room for argument and more time for establishing a game plan for moving forward in each students' learning.
