Part of having mastery and keeping up with current methodologies is immersing oneself into the curriculum. Throughout the Children's Literature course I took, I was required to read 42 children's books (picture books to young adult chapter books). After completing a picture book or novel, I did a write up summarizing what the story was about and created an extension activity that tied the story to a PA standard. The books that were read were from different genre areas. This allowed me to not only become more knowledgeable of the books current students were reading, but also stretched me to explore genres I normally would not have explored myself. Having a knowledge of literature students are interested in allows me to give better book recommendations to students, as well as allows me to be knowledgeable in knowing if the books is at the student's reading level or not. The best part of this project is I will be able to use this E-Book file in my future classroom to give to parents and students as a list of recommended texts to read if they are not sure of what to read next or what their child should be reading. I will also be able to add to this E-Book file as I read more novels in the future. It is so important for teachers to stay up to date on literature. Being knowledgeable of the content students are reading helps create more effective conferences with students, as well as more accurate records of how the students is doing in other areas such as comprehension and vocabulary development. Although this E-Book file only contains 42 books now, I will be continuing to add to it and immersing myself in children's literature in the future.
