During my class on Culturally Relevant Pedagogy, I created a lesson plan on opinions that was differentiated for three different stages of English Language Learner (ELL) students (entering, emerging, and expanding stages). This lesson plan challenged me to make learning accessible for a variety of learners, while simultaneously making sure that they still were learning the same material. Although it took more planning on my part, it taught me the importance of adapting learning to meet the needs of all students. As an educator is it so important to know your students and their current ability levels. This can be applied to all learners, not just ELLs. Crafting this lesson plan showed me that differentiating a lesson is possible and can be done simultaneously while teaching students who may not need adaptations. This lesson plan challenged me to know my students and to adapt what I originally planned to meet the needs of all students, whether they knew a few words of English, or they were fluent in English. As educators, knowing our students not only allows for us to make appropriate adaptations, but also helps us to reach all of our students by designing instruction around what they connect with. In the future, I will design instruction around what motivates and reaches my students. I will strive to develop meaningful relationships with my students, in order to teach them where they are at and challenge them to be the best student they can be.
