During my High Incident Disabilities class, I was provided the opportunity to adapt part of a masonry instructional packet for students participating in the George Junior Republic vo-tech. program. For this project, I used PowerPoint and Office Mix to transform the manual into a less text heavy and more engaging form. I was tasked with teaching the students how to reduce fractions. I used visuals, animations, and voice-overs to explain this process for students. I then took the handout students had to complete and made the questions more engaging. I did this through the use of matching questions, a fraction reducing machine game, and reveal the answer questions. All directions were recorded using Office Mix so that students who struggled with literacy could understand what was required of them. I added gif images and emoji pictures throughout to make the PowerPoint presentations more engaging and relevant to the students who will be using it. This project ties into Danielson component 1B because in order to provide appropriate instruction for students, the teacher needs to know their students and their current abilities. The students at George Junior, in this case, were really struggling with literacy. In order for the students to be able to participate in their vo-tech. programs, they had to complete these manuals. To make achieving this task more plausible, I adapted the manual into a form that was comprehensible for the students. This project also ties into Universal Design for Instruction because I was able to present the information in another format so that students could still show their teacher what they knew, but also had the opportunity to attempt the task because the material was presented in a way they could understand.
